Thanksgiving is just a few days away and and time to look back on the past year. On the political scene we helped in getting some good legislation passed, had some important issues postponed for a future fight and seen major change in who will govern us. On a personal level we have lost dear friends, family, and fellow members while welcoming new lives into our families. Through all our ups and downs and trials and tribulations our lives are better than a vast number of people in the world. Someone once said "the problem isn't the problem. How you feel about the problem is the problem".

ABATE of California would like to wish everyone a

Safe and Happy Thanksgiving

Welcome from ABATE of California

ABATE of California is a motorcyclists' rights organization dedicated to preserving individual freedom and promoting safety. We fully support rider training, safety and educational programs. Our members also raise funds for the less fortunate, through charity runs and benefits. We encourage our members to become active in their local communities. ABATE works to protect the rights of all motorcyclists through direct involvement in the political process. You, as an individual, can help in the ongoing struggle against anti-motorcycle legislation both here in California and across the United States by becoming an ABATE member.

ABATE is non-partisan and welcomes all riders, on-road and off-road. We give those with a strong interest in motorcycling to unite and become part of one of California's strongest motorcycle rights organizations. ABATE feels that all of us, lifestyle rider to off-road fan are brothers and sisters with a common interest -- riding free.

Vote Like a Biker

Well it is mid November and our election has come and gone. We have a new President-elect and Vice President-elect and many changes in all levels of government across the country. That does not mean our work is done until the next election. New bills will be presented in the new year and some will affect or be of interest to the motorcycling community. There will be events, calls to action of letter writing, phone calls, volunteering to help. Our job is never ending for as a wise man once said "Eternal vigilance is the price of Liberty" T. Jefferson

Anti-profiling bill signed by Governor in Maryland

Last week Maryland became the second state in the nation, after Washington, to pass a Motorcycling Profiling Bill. The Maryland Coalition of Clubs with the collaborative support of ABATE of Maryland passed the bill unopposed. Maryland's success is proof that a unified grassroots movement can work and inspire the rest of the country. Details can be found HERE.

Lane Splitting in California

Splitting lanes in California is LEGAL! If done in a reckless manner you are still open to a wreckless driving ticket. Guidelines for lane splitting used to be on the CHP and DMV websites but were removed due to a single complaint. The new law, in addition to legalizing lane splitting, creates a committee to create guidelines for the practice.

Click this link to Download Lane Splitting Guidelines in PDF. This is provided by the California Motorcycle Safety Program which is California's official motorcycle safety and training program. To find a course location near you, www.californiamotorcyclist.com or call 1.877.RIDE.411

Safety First

We are in fall and approaching winter  and a new awareness is necessary during this season. In cold weather wind chill can be a serious danger. Depending on how cold you ride in, clear desert nights can be as severe as moutain low temps. Dress in layers. They insulate better and can be removed as needed as the temps rise. Insulated gloves are a great addition and I use them. However, if they are more than a few years old you should replace them. The insulationg material loses its "loft" and its insulating properties. Wearing chaps will help protect your lower body from wind chill as well as help protect your legs from kicked up debris. And lastly, there are the electrically heated gloves, vests, seats, and grips.

Riding a motorcycle can be dangerous. If you do not stay aware of your surroundings and options you may find yourself in a dangerous place. Confidence is required. Sometimes you experience a crisis of confidence when riding. HERE are some thoughts on dealing with it.

Motorcycle Safety Program

Whether you are new to riding or a seasoned veteran there is room for improving your riding skills. If you are under 18 a MSP course is required to get your Class "M" endorsement. Check HERE for more info about classes and where you can attend.
